The lost army/L'armata perduta

This is a DBA Macedonian army that Garner painted for IlVJ when he was living in Japan (perhaps around 2007), but I only realized it had never been photographed until last year, so I made sure I rectified the mistake as soon as I got back on holiday.

Questo e' un esercito di Macedoni per DBA che Garner aveva dipinto per IlVJ quendo viveva in Giappone (probabilmente intorno al 2007), ma mi sono accorto di non averlo mai fotografato solo l'anno scorso, quindi mi sono premurato di provvedere appena arrivato in Italia.

Back from Italy/Di ritorno dall'Italia

 I just came back from my 4 weeks holiday in Italy, it was nice so see family and friends after three years.

Obviously, the family tradition of moving miniatures through continents could not be abandoned, so I brought quite a bit of painted miniatures back to Italy and selected a good number of unpainted stuff to bring to Canada with me for some future painting.

The idea is to try to quickly paint all my 1/72 soldiers between 2022 and 2023, more on this in later posts.

When I unpacked all the stuff I brought back, I found (as expected) some damage on the heavier miniatures, especially the napoleonic chesses, so I had a quick touch up session with a friend and his kid. 

I also did some minor changes to a few of my previously painted Red Scorpions space marines. I originally planned to paint a large army of Red Scorpions, but I now decided, since I hardly play 40K anyway, that I'll go for a mix of units from the original Badab War colour schemes found on the Warhammer 40K compendium, so I had to condensate half painted units into consistent groups and get the extra models originally planned for those units "free" for more varied paint schemes.

I also managed to squeeze a few of the primed marines I had left behind 5 years ago into my luggage, so I should be able to paint them when I want a break from historical or fantasy stuff and maybe have a game or two of Rogue Trader or 40K second edition in the future.

The napoleonic chess set was given to our dad with only 21 years delay and missing the british pions, currently still in Japan, but he was very happy and we set what was there in a cabinet where he keeps some of his ship models (let me know if that could be a subject you'd like to see covered on the blog or in a different one).

Overall it was great to be on holiday and take a break from painting, now that I'm back home it's time to unpack and resume the painting.

Sono appena arrivato da 4 settimane di vacanza in Italia, e' stato molto bello rivedere amici e famigliari dopo 3 anni di assenza.

Ovviamente la tradizione di famiglia di traslocare miniature tra i continenti va mantenuta viva, quindi ho riempito la valigia di scatole di miniature dipinte e la' ne ho prese il piu' possibile da portarmi in Canada per proseguire nel lavoro di dipingere tutte le scorte accumulate negli anni.

Per il 2022/2023, vorrei riuscire a dipingere tutti i soldatini in scala 1/72 che posseggo (credo tra i 1500 ed i 2000), ma prevedo di usare un quickshade o metodo simile.

Questa scelta e' data da vari fattori: primo, senza il dipping probabilmente non dipingerei mai tutti i soldatini in 1/72 delle piu' disparate epoche che possiedo. Molti di questi soldatini mi sono stati donati dal mio amico Marco che li ha da quando era un ragazzino, quindi meritano di essere dipinti, anche se probabilmente non vedranno mai un campo di battaglia, ma rappresentano una fase importante della nostra infanzia e sono una delle ragioni che ci hanno portato dove siamo oggi come hobby e interessi.

Un altro motivo e' che il quick shade ha un effetto protettivo fondamentale per i soldatini di plastica molle che altrimenti si rovinerebbero molto facilmente.

Pochi giorni dopo il mio arrivo, mi sono trovato con un amico e sui figlio, per una sessione di pitture, nella quale ho ritoccatio i pezzi rovinati durante il viaggio, specialmente alcuni degli scacchi napoleonici ed ho apportato delle modifiche ad alcuni space marines dei Red Scorpions che avevo dipinto in passato.

Inizialmente volevo mettere assieme un grosse esercito che fosse veloce da dipingere, ma siccome ormai non gioco praticamente piu' a Warhammer 40,000, ho deciso di dipingere i pezzi che mi rimangono solo per divertimento e di farli nelle livree originali della Badab War presentate nel Warhammer 40,000 compendium di Rogue Trader.

Per ultimo i pezzi della scacchiera (tranne i fanti britannici che si trovano ancora in Giappone) sono stati regalati a nostro padre che, nonostante i 21 anni di ritarto, ha molto gradito il regalo e li ha piazzati in una vetrinetta dove ha alcuni dei suoi modelli navali (fatemi sapere se potrebbe essere un argomento che vorreste vedere sul blog).

Nel complesso e' stato molto piacevole rivedere persone e luoghi che mi mancano sempre e la pausa modellistica che ne e' conseguita mi ha aiutato a ricaricarmi e prepararmi a riprendere a dipingere ora che sono tornato a casa.

The last post of 2021/L'ultimo post del 2021

 Here we are, the end of the year is near and, since I'm in the middle of a painting burnout, I can wrap it up and do the math, since I will certainly not paint anything before the beginning of 2022.

I will also go to Italy for a few weeks, so there will likely not be any more posts since the end of January.

Let's start by saying that this year I painted more than 1/3 of what I painted was for other people, I generally try to keep a 2:1 ratio between what I paint for me and what I do for others, but this year I ended up painting a ton of figures for many friends and the numbers got unbalanced, even if I still managed to keep the ratio pretty close.

Eccoci alla fine dell'anno siccome sono nel mezzo di un periodo di burnout, non dipingero' di sicuro piu' nulla prima della fine dell'anno, quindi posso tirare le somme per il 2021.

Siccome sto per partire per l'Italia per alcune settimane, non ci saranno nuovi post fino alla fine di gennaio, ma non temete, tornero' dalla vacanza carico e piu' produttivo che mai.

Coalition States troops for Rifts rpg/Truppe dei Coalition States per il gdr di Rifts

 This week I have some models I painted to use as Coalition State grunts and Psy stalkers. These models are from a sci-fi chess set of some unknown manufacturer.

They are not very nice models, but with a quick and simple paint job they will do the job.

Questa settimana ho dei pezzi che usero' come truppe e Psy stalkers della Coalition State. Non ho idea di che ditta siano, ma fanno parte di una scacchiera a tema fantascienza.

Non sono dei gran pezzi, ma con una colorazione semplice e rapida vanno benissimo.

Chess set finished/Scacchiera completata

 And after more than 20 years, we finally did it, the chess set is finally done.

I'll be visiting the family in Italy for Christmas, so I'll bring all my part of the chess pieces back home, IlVJ should be able to visit in the summer and the set will be finally complete and fully painted.

Our dad had to wait a couple decades, but we managed to complete his present. In retrospect, we would never have been able to do it in the 90s, we needed to accumulate skill and experience to tackle a project like this.

E dopo piu' di vent'anni, finalmente ce l'abbiamo fatta, la scacchiera ei finita.

Andro' in Italia a visitare la famiglia per natale, quindi portero' la mia parte della scacchiera a casa, IlVJ dovrebbe riuscire ad andare la prossima estate e il set sara' finalmente riunito e completamente dipinto.

Nostro papa' ha dovuto aspettare un paio di decadi, ma siamo riusciti a completare il suo regalo. Col senno di poi, non saremmo mai stati in grado di finire la scacchiera negli anni '90, dovevamo impratichirci ed accumulare esperiena per portare a termine un progetto del genere.

Chess set almost done/Scacchiaera quasi finita

 This week I have an interesting group of chess pieces, the kings and queens, as well as a couple of standard bearers (bishops).

The standard bearers were painfully long to paint, the tartan, the socks and the union jack took forever to complete, but Napoleon and Josephine, Lord and Lady Wellington were a lot of fun and much easier.

Now all I have to do is finish the French banner bearers and the whole set will be complete.

Questa settimana ho un interessante gruppo di scacchi, i re, le regine ed un paio di alfieri.

Gli alfieri sono stati un'impresa da dipingere, i tartan, le calze e gli Union Jack sono stati lunghissimi da finire, ma in compenso Napoleone e Josephine, Lord e Lady Wallington sono stati molto divertenti da dipingere.

Ora non mi resta che finire i due alfieri francesi e la scacchiera sara' completa.

Oldhammer Orc siege dinosaur/Dinosauro d'assedio degli Orchi di Oldhammer

 This project is a homage to the old school idea to use toy dinosaurs as siege beasts. A few months ago I bought 4 of these at the dollar store to add to a Tamiya one that I bought years ago in Japan.

They will be part of two different armies, but since they are quite long to complete, I will probably post one or two at the time over the course of a few months.

Basing these models is quite a challenge, any base big enough for them tend to warp if sanded or textured with wall filler. 

I luckily had a plastic display base IlVJ had given me on my last trip to Japan, it is kind of thick to be running around a battlefield, but I'm sure these models will only appear in big battles and, given the rate of games I'm managing at the moment, it won't be soon anyway.

Questo progetto e' un omaggio alle idee vecchia scuola di usare dei dinosauri giocattolo come bestie d'assedio. Alcuni mesi fa ho comprato 4 di questi dinosauri al dollarama, da aggiungere ad un modello della Tamiya che comprai anni fa in Giappone.

Faranno parte di due diversi eserciti, ma siccome ci vuole abbastanza a completarne anche uno solo, li postero' probabilmente uno o due alla volta nel corso dei prossimi mesi.

Trovare un piedistalloa datto a pezzi cosi' grossi e' sempre un problema, qualunque piedistallo di legno o MDF grosso abbastanza, tende ad imbarcarsi, una volta testurizzato con sabbia o stucco.

Fortunatamente durante il mio ultimo viaggio in Giappone, IlVJ mi ha omaggiato di questo piedistallo da esposizione che, anche se un po' spesso, e' comunque utilizzabile su un campo di battaglia. Considerando anche la scarsa quantita' di partite dell'ultimo periodo, questo non costituisce alcun problema.

Napoleonic chess set of the battle of Waterloo/Set di scacchi napoleonici della battaglia di Waterloo

 This is a special project that we never properly explained on the blog, so it is time to rectify this omission.

During the second half of the 90s me and IlVJ were part of a small modelling club (GMCR) in a village near Torino.

The guy organizing the modelling club had a store and some contacts with high end military figures painters who gave him stuff to sell, so I ended up buying this chess set consisting of 32 (obviously) napoleonic figure in 54mm themed after the battle of Waterloo.

Since our dad always had some interest in chess, we decided that it would have been a cool idea to paint the set for his 60th birthday, which would be in 2000, we figured that with a few years before us we could totally do it.

The project turned out to be way out of our league, IlVJ painted two horses and two rooks for the French, but subsequently moved to Japan and took a very long break form modelling, and we kind of forgot about the project.

When I decided to move to Canada I planned to try to finish all the half painted and primed miniatures I had laying around, so I stumbled on some French imperial guard pawns for the set which were primed black and had been waiting for about 20 years to be painted.

I finished 2 of them before moving to Canada, and then took the remaining 6 with me. I painted them, but I forgot their rifles in Italy, so they are waiting to be reunited soon.

In the meantime IlVJ managed to get the British pawns shipped to him and completed them, now the remaining pieces are on their way in a package my parents sent me and I will try to paint all of them before going to visit them for Christmas.

If all goes according to the new plan, our dad should be able to get his 60 years birthday present with a mere 21 years delay, let's hope it all goes according to plan.

Questo e' un progetto spaciale di cui non abbiamo mai dato chiare spiegazioni sul blog, quindi e' ora di rettificare questa mancanza.

Nella seconda meta' degli anni '90, io ed IlVJ, facevamo parte di un piccolo gruppo di modellismo (il GMCR) in un paese vicino a Torino (Rosta)

Il tizio che gestiva il gruppo aveva un negozio di modellismo e parecchi contatti con pittori di alto livello che sovente gli lasciavano della merce in conto vendita ed io finii per comprare, per un ottimo prezzo, un set di scacchi composto da 32 (ovviamente) figurini in 54mm, rappresentante la battaglia di Waterloo.

Siccome nostro papa' ha sempre avuto interesse per gli scacchi, l'idea era di dipingere il set per il suo sessantesimo compleanno (nel 2000), pensavamo che avendo qualche anno a disposizione non sarebbe stato un problema.

IlVJ dipinse subito due cavalli e due torri, ma poi ci rendemmo conto che il progetto era decisamente al di fuori della nostra portata, IlVJ si trasferi' in Giappone e perdemmo slancio, quasi dimenticandoci del progetto.

Quando io decisi di trasferirmi in Canada, ero intenzionato a finire tutti i modelli mezzo dipinti o solo imprimerati che avevo in giro, quindi mi imbattei nella fanteria francese preparata anni prima dal VJ e riuscii a finire un paio di pezzi prima di partire e portai con me i rimanenti 6, anche se dimenticai i fucili in Italia.

Nel frattempo IlVJ si e' fatto spedire la fanteria Britannica ed e' riuscito a finirla in tempi brevi, mentre io aspetto i rimanenti pezzi che sono tuttora in un pacco diretti da me.

Se va tutto bene, dovremmo riuscire a finire tutta la scacchiera con giusto 21 anni di ritardo per il sessantesimo compleanno di nostro papa'.
