This is a special project that we never properly explained on the blog, so it is time to rectify this omission.
During the second half of the 90s me and IlVJ were part of a small modelling club (GMCR) in a village near Torino.
The guy organizing the modelling club had a store and some contacts with high end military figures painters who gave him stuff to sell, so I ended up buying this chess set consisting of 32 (obviously) napoleonic figure in 54mm themed after the battle of Waterloo.
Since our dad always had some interest in chess, we decided that it would have been a cool idea to paint the set for his 60th birthday, which would be in 2000, we figured that with a few years before us we could totally do it.
The project turned out to be way out of our league, IlVJ painted two horses and two rooks for the French, but subsequently moved to Japan and took a very long break form modelling, and we kind of forgot about the project.
When I decided to move to Canada I planned to try to finish all the half painted and primed miniatures I had laying around, so I stumbled on some French imperial guard pawns for the set which were primed black and had been waiting for about 20 years to be painted.
I finished 2 of them before moving to Canada, and then took the remaining 6 with me. I painted them, but I forgot their rifles in Italy, so they are waiting to be reunited soon.
In the meantime IlVJ managed to get the British pawns shipped to him and completed them, now the remaining pieces are on their way in a package my parents sent me and I will try to paint all of them before going to visit them for Christmas.
If all goes according to the new plan, our dad should be able to get his 60 years birthday present with a mere 21 years delay, let's hope it all goes according to plan.
Questo e' un progetto spaciale di cui non abbiamo mai dato chiare spiegazioni sul blog, quindi e' ora di rettificare questa mancanza.
Nella seconda meta' degli anni '90, io ed IlVJ, facevamo parte di un piccolo gruppo di modellismo (il GMCR) in un paese vicino a Torino (Rosta)
Il tizio che gestiva il gruppo aveva un negozio di modellismo e parecchi contatti con pittori di alto livello che sovente gli lasciavano della merce in conto vendita ed io finii per comprare, per un ottimo prezzo, un set di scacchi composto da 32 (ovviamente) figurini in 54mm, rappresentante la battaglia di Waterloo.
Siccome nostro papa' ha sempre avuto interesse per gli scacchi, l'idea era di dipingere il set per il suo sessantesimo compleanno (nel 2000), pensavamo che avendo qualche anno a disposizione non sarebbe stato un problema.
IlVJ dipinse subito due cavalli e due torri, ma poi ci rendemmo conto che il progetto era decisamente al di fuori della nostra portata, IlVJ si trasferi' in Giappone e perdemmo slancio, quasi dimenticandoci del progetto.
Quando io decisi di trasferirmi in Canada, ero intenzionato a finire tutti i modelli mezzo dipinti o solo imprimerati che avevo in giro, quindi mi imbattei nella fanteria francese preparata anni prima dal VJ e riuscii a finire un paio di pezzi prima di partire e portai con me i rimanenti 6, anche se dimenticai i fucili in Italia.
Nel frattempo IlVJ si e' fatto spedire la fanteria Britannica ed e' riuscito a finirla in tempi brevi, mentre io aspetto i rimanenti pezzi che sono tuttora in un pacco diretti da me.
Se va tutto bene, dovremmo riuscire a finire tutta la scacchiera con giusto 21 anni di ritardo per il sessantesimo compleanno di nostro papa'.
